Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) has emerged as a viable alternative and complement to fiber in areas where laying cables is impractical. Leveraging existing infrastructure, FWA can deliver broadband speeds comparable to fiber, especially with the advent of 5G.
The Role of Satellite Internet
Satellite technology, led by companies like SpaceX and OneWeb, has also entered the broadband conversation. While traditionally associated with high latency and limited capacity, advancements in low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites have made satellite internet a game-changer for remote and underserved regions.

Public-private partnerships (PPPs) have already shown promise in expanding broadband access, combining the strengths of multiple technologies to deliver comprehensive solutions.

While a multi-technology approach is promising, it also presents challenges. Ensuring interoperability, managing costs, and addressing environmental concerns are critical issues that must be tackled. Additionally, policy frameworks must evolve to support a diverse broadband ecosystem.
As the broadband landscape continues to evolve, it’s clear that a singular focus on fiber is no longer sufficient. By shifting the narrative to “fiber and,” the industry can leverage the strengths of multiple technologies to create a more inclusive and resilient broadband future. Whether it’s through fiber, fixed wireless, satellite, or 5G, the ultimate goal remains the same: universal connectivity that empowers communities and drives economic growth.
