Headline: Alaska’s BEAD Plan Comes with a Hefty Price: $113,000 Per Location for Broadband Access, should other options be considered over Fiber?
Article: Between the vast open lands, drastic changes in temperatures, and short construction period, some question whether fiber builds are the way for Alaska. Quintillion Subsea Operations LLC, utilizing a fiber build, achieves the highest rate with $112,438, covering over 700 BSLs. While Space Exploration Technologies Corp (SpaceX), using LEO has the lowest running rate of $1,500 covering over 14,000 BSL’s. The other awarded applicants’ costs range from $7,000-$95,000 per location with a full blend of builds. These numbers are open for public comment and still awaiting approval from the NTIA.
